GRATER KUMASI MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY (GKMA) HOUSEHOLD BIODIGESTER SENSITIZATION ON WORLD TOILET DAY.

On November 24th, 2023, an impactful event unfolded in Suame Anumangye as part of the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly’s (GKMA) biodigester sensitization campaign on World Toilet Day. The initiative aimed to raise awareness about sustainable sanitation practices and the benefits of adopting biodigester toilets within the community.

The event featured active involvement from the household toilet team members, who played a pivotal role in educating the residents about the advantages of the biodigester facility. Their efforts included explaining the environmental benefits, cost-effectiveness, and long-term sustainability of biodigesters as an alternative sanitation solution.

To enhance community engagement, the assembly member and unit committee members actively participated in the dissemination of information. Their presence not only underscored the significance of the event but also facilitated a direct and personalized exchange of knowledge between community leaders and residents.

In addition to educational efforts, the sensitization event included a registration process for individuals interested in adopting the biodigester facility. This practical aspect allowed community members to express their willingness to embrace sustainable sanitation practices, contributing to the overall success of the initiative.

The collaboration between household toilet team members, community leaders, and interested residents on World Toilet Day exemplified a community-driven approach to environmental health. By combining education with hands-on registration, the event aimed to create a lasting impact, fostering a sense of responsibility towards adopting eco-friendly sanitation solutions within Suame Anomangye.

WORLD BANK MISSION TO ANDREWS ADVENTIST PREPARATORY AND JHS, ADADIEM M/A BASIC SCHOOL AND SOME HOUSEHOLD TOILETS AT KWAPRA.

The financiers (The World Bank) of the Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Project paid a working visit to Andrews Adventist Preparatory and JHS and Adadiem M/A Basic School on Tuesday 10th October 2023 to familiarize themselves with the status of ongoing wash facilities in the municipality. The visit also afforded the team the opportunity to interact with the key stakeholders in the project on proper ways to sustain the facilities to ensure that the facilities live up to their expected life span.

The team was made up of the staff of the project Coordinating Unit of the project, the staff of the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, the management staff of the beneficiary schools, Project team from Suame Municipal Assembly, the Contractors, the Municipal Director of Education and his SHEP coordinator as well as some members of the schools’ Parent Teacher Associations.

The World Bank Team was satisfied with the kind of craftsmanship at both Andrews Adventist Preparatory and JHS and Adadiem M/A Basic School at Maakro and Tarkwa respectively

REPORT ON STAKEHOLDERS ENGAGEMENT WITH OCCUPANTS OF KROPO REDEVELOPMENT MARKET

INTRODUCTION

The Suame Municipal Assembly through the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD) secured funding from World Bank under the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme (GSCCP) and used part of the funds to redevelop Kropo Market into modern market.

The project which started in the year 2020 is nearing completion with One Hundred and Forty-Two (142) stores at various sides of the market as well as Sixty-Five (65) stalls ready to be allocated to the occupants of the market at various prices.

The project also houses a Police Post, First Aid Block and toilet facilities.

The Municipal Chief Executive – Hon. Maxwell Ofosu Boakye, Municipal Co-ordinating Director – Mr. Johnson Nyarko, Municipal Works Engineer – Mr. Emmanuel Effah Yeboah, Presiding Member – Hon. Kofi Boakye Ansah, Assembly Member for New Suame Kotoko – Hon Eric Owusu Ansah together with members of the Kropo Redevelopment Market Committee met all the occupants of the stores/stalls on Thursday, 19th October, 2023 at the Car Park of Suame Municipal Assembly.

PARTICIPANTS

A total of One Hundred and Nineteen (119) persons attended the meeting comprising of Ninety-Three (93) females and Twenty-Six (26) males.

REMARKS BY THE ASSEMBLYMAN FOR NEW SUAME KOTOKO

As part of the engagement, Hon. Eric Owusu Ansah welcomed occupants of Kropo Redevelopment and apologized for the delay in starting the meeting. He then took the occupants through the prices of the various stores/stalls built by the Assembly and cautioned members against selling the stores to outsiders’ or forfeit their ownership. He also urged the occupants to comply with the directives strictly as stipulated in the tenancy agreement to them.

The prices for the lockable stores ranges from GH₵ 15,000.00 to GH₵ 50,000.00 whiles the open sheds go for GH₵ 5,000.00 each.

REMARKS BY THE MUNICIPAL CHIEF EXECUTIVE

On his part, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Maxwell Ofosu Boakye expressed his appreciation to the occupants for their patience for the past two (2) years to make way for the redevelopment of the market. He informed them that the stores will be given to them for a goodwill for five (5) years after which they are expected to pay rent on them. He was quick to add that irrespective of the number of stores one has, only (1) would be given to you. He added that a five (5) month duration commencing November, 2023 to March, 2024 would be given to make payment for the stores/stalls. He therefore advised the owners to contact the Assemblyman for New Suame Kotoko for the account details before payment is made and a copy of the pay in slip brought to the Municipal Finance Officer at the Assembly for compilation.

He, however added that after the expiration of the duration period, the stores/stalls will be sold out to other persons who are ready to pay for them. Again, persons who have made partial payments after the duration period will forfeit the ownership of the stores/stalls and their monies refunded to them and given to persons ready to fully pay for them.

OPEN FORUM

The Occupants were given the opportunity to express their views and they commended the Assembly for considering their plight in coming out with the prices for the stores/stalls. Their questions centered on increasing the duration for the payment for the stores/stalls, reduction in the prices for the stores/stalls and promotion of trade at the market.

The Municipal Chief Executive took time to explain to the occupants that comparatively the prices for the stores/stalls is the lowest within the Greater Kumasi Assemblies and the duration given is reasonable since the inception of the project occupants were informed that monies would be paid for them. He ended his submission by pledging his commitment to ensure that trading at the market would be promoted to generate the needed revenue for both the owners and the Assembly.

CONCLUSION

In the nutshell, there was a fruitful deliberation with the occupants of the market and payment had since commenced for the stores/stalls.

Fire Outbreak.

On October 15, 2023, the office recorded a total of one (1) fire case, affecting seventeen (17) victims with no death. The total cost of damage resulting from fire was twenty thousand Ghana Cedis (GH 20,000).

REDEVELOPMENT OF OLD SUAME MARKET INTO ULTRA – MODERN MARKET STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT.

Stakeholders engagement on the preparation of Abbreviated Resettlement Action Plan (ARAP) held on Wednesday 13th September,2023 at Suame Municipal Assemble Conference hall.

Suame Municipal Assembly has secured funding from World Bank under Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme and intends to use part of the funds to redevelop Old Suame Market into Ultra-Modern Market.

As part of the programme implementation a consultant has been engaged to support the Assembly to prepare an Abbreviated Resettlement Action Plan based on World Bank Involuntary Resettlement Policy.

Mr. George Awudi the ARAP consultant met the key stakeholders of the project namely the Safeguards Team of Suame Municipal Assembly, Chiefs of the Project Area, Assembly Members of the Project Area, Project Affected Persons to discuss on the ways to relocate the occupants of the said land. This was to pave way for the occupants to relocate to enable construction work to commence.

The Ghana Enterprises Agency in partnership with the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) is implementing the GEA/BADEA Youth for Entrepreneurship Program. The Project’s strategic objective is to create an enabling environment that supports the creation and growth of youth-led enterprises by nurturing and innovation business ideas, increasing access to finance and market, and improving business operating procedures.

The Suame BAC in support of the Municipality organized one-day sensitization for beneficiaries in support of filling the BADEA application forms.

REDEVELOPMENT OF KROPO MARKET INTO ULTRA – MODERN MARKET.

Kropo market is one of the markets in Suame Municipality which was in a very deplorable state and lacked certain modern market facilities such as place of convenience, Police Post, First Aid Block.

As a result of the aforementioned condition patronage at the market was very low. Trading activities were not encouraging which also means that the assembly could not generate enough revenue from the market. The old structures were single storey buildings coupled with bad surface condition with no streetlights.

It was against this background that the Assembly since its inception in 2018 made efforts to revamp the market under the able leadership of the Hon. Member of Parliament for Suame, Hon Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu and the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Maxwell Ofosu Boakye. Through the World Bank Facility dubbed Ghana Secondary Cities Support Program being implemented by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development supported the redevelopment of the market into ultra-modern market.

The new facilities are made up of a total of 65 Open Sheds, 130 Lockable Stores, Police Post and First Aid Block with a 20 seater water closet toilet facilities access road with streetlights. The open space is expected to be paved.   

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT

  1. To promote trade activities in the municipality
  2. To create employment for the citizens
  3. To increase internally generated funds for the assembly
  4. To create more space for traders to undertake their trading activities

INSPECTION OF NEWLY FUEL STATION FLOODED AT MAAKRO by S.M.A NADMO  

A joint inspection organiser by EPA to ascertain the flood reported to the office of a newly fuel station which has been constructed close to a drain at Maakro new road bridge.

After the inspection findings:

  1. No drain constructed within the vicinity of the fuel station
  2. Blocked small drain from passing around the fuel station.
  3. No chamber for the free flow of water from the magazine to the main drain
  4. Land used for the fuel station swampy area of which is a clay.
